Why Iranian Relations Matter

Many people who listen to or watch the news, or keep up with current events online will know that there is a lot going on in the middle east. It seems to be very important to the people in charge and the people running the news stations. Not everyone knows exactly why united states relations with Iran matter unless you have been following it for a while, and without someone to ask it can be easy to stay in the dark on why Iran US relations are important, and how current events affect those relations and why that matters. Here are a few of the reasons that the US is interested in Iran, and why the United States Relations with Iran keep showing up in your news stream.

Black Gold

The most commonly known issue and reason why the US tries to maintain relations with Iran are the oil reserves found there. Many of the countries in the Middle East have vast oil reserves, and are some of the largest exporters, meaning that until other sources of energy are found, Iran and the Middle East will have a lot of economic weight to throw around. The US is one of the highest users of oil and natural gas, meaning that keeping up Iran US relations are going to be important if they want to keep the prices low and the people happy.

The US is one of the largest supporters and proponents of democracy and has gone out of its way multiple times to help establish democracies and push democratic causes around the world. Few countries in the Middle East have or have been able to maintain lasting democracies, but Iran is in a unique position and is well suited to start their own democracy with minimal foreign influence. United States relations with Iran are naturally important as the US tries to support new democratic governments in the world stage. This also has the ability to influence the surrounding countries, increasing democratic influences. This is something the US wants, meaning than they will try to maintain good relations.

Iran also has a lot of geopolitical and cultural influence in the Middle East, where the US has many varied interests. This naturally means that the US wants to increase its influence with Iran and by extension it’s influence in the Middle East. Iran could help stabilize or destabilize large parts of the surrounding area, meaning that United States relations there need to be good if the US wants to push the area in either direction. The US has a history of violence in the Middle East and good relations with Iran will be important to avoid that in the future.

What the US does in Iran, and whether or not it is good is ultimately depends on each situation. You should have your own opinion, and support that. It is important however to know why Iran matters, so you know why your opinion matters, and what the results of relations with Iran could eventually be.
